Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln and a Civil War hero in his own right, originally built Hildene as a summer home. Today, the historic dwelling is open for tours in the summer months, but reverts to a ski lodge of sorts during the bitter cold of the Vermont winter. The historic former home is located a short drive south of Manchester proper, past the Ekwanok Country Club near Dellwood Cemetery.
